Chris Maxcer sounds off on the iPhone usability factor. The upshot? He likes it, but goes into great detail why it is great.

It doesn’t happen very often, but once in a while an iPhone will stop responding to user input. When this happens you can reset your iPhone by just holding down the top and bottom button until it turns itself off (usually about six seconds). Then click the top button once to restart.

This procedure is perfectly safe and should work so long as there is nothing physically wrong with your iPhone. (That is, unless it hung because you installed some nasty hack that completely borked the device.) Your settings and data should be in the state you left them.
